HISTORICAL CONTEXT
The United States granted Temporary Protected Status to Haiti following the January 12 2010 earthquake that
killed over 200,000 people and displaced 1.5 million. TPS has been repeatedly extended through subsequent
administrations based on continued instability including the 2016 Hurricane Matthew, ongoing political crisis, and
gang violence escalation. The Trump administration previously attempted to terminate Haiti TPS in 2018 but was
blocked by federal courts.
